Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination that primarily tests a comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in engineering and technology. GATE is conducted mutually by the Indian Institute of Science and seven IITs (IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee) on behalf of the National Coordination Board – GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), and Government of India.
The GATE score of a candidate reflects a comparative performance level in a particular paper in the exam across several years, the score is used for admissions to post-graduate engineering programmes (M.E., M.Tech, and direct Ph.D) in Indian higher education institutes with financial assistance provided by MHRD and other Govt agencies.
Admission to post graduate programmes with MHRD and some other government scholarship/assistantship at engineering colleges/institutes in the country are open to those who qualify through GATE. GATE trained candidates with Bachelor degree in Engineering, Architecture, Pharmacy ,Technology or Master degree in any branch of Science, Computer Applications, Mathematics, Statistics are eligible for Master, Doctoral programmes in Engineering, Pharmacy, Architecture, Technology as well as for Doctoral programmes in relevant branches of Science. To gain the scholarship, the candidate must additionally secure admission to such a postgraduate programmes, according to the existing process of the admitting institution. GATE criterion, however, is not required for candidates with Master degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/ Pharmacy who may be seeking scholarship/assistantship for relevant doctoral programmes.
The subsequent categories of candidates are eligible to appear in GATE:
B.E./B.Tech/B.Arch: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Architecture (4 years after 10+2 / Post Diploma/ Post B.Sc.)
M.Sc/M.A. / MCA: Master’s degree in any branch of Science/ Mathematics / Statistics/Computer applications or equivalent.
Int M.E./M.Tech or Dual Degree (after 10+2 or Diploma): Integrated Master’s degree programs or dual degree programs in Engineering/Technology (five year program).
Int M.E./M.Tech (Post B.Sc): Integrated Master’s degree programs in Engineering/ Technology (four year programs).
Professional Society Examinations (equivalent to B.E/ B.Arch /B.Tech): B.E./B.Tech equivalent examinations, of Professional Societies, accepted by MHRD/UPSC/AICTE ( AMICE by the Institute of Civil Engineers-India, AMIE by Institution of Engineers-India)
How to Apply:

GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS website) can be accessed from the website of the respective zonal GATE Offices or from the website of the organizing institute.
For GATE 2015 payments have to be made through online by selecting either SBI I-collect or Axis Bank I-Connect, or using any bank debit card/credit card, net banking and e-challan facilities only.
Application Fees: The application fee is Rs. 1500/- for General/OBC male applicants Rs. 750/- for female candidates and Rs. 750/- for the SC/ST/PwD category applicants.
The GATE examination consists of one paper of 3-hour duration that contains 65 questions carrying a maximum of 100 marks.
The question paper will comprise of both multiple choice questions (MCQ) and numerical answer type questions.
The examination for all the papers will be taken out in an online Computer Based Test (CBT) mode where the candidates will be shown the questions in a random sequence on a computer screen.
